Starting in Fall 2023, Duke University began transitioning from Sakai to Canvas as its primary Learning Management System. Our goal is to have every class in Canvas by Fall 2024, but this means that throughout this academic year, you may use Canvas for some classes and Sakai for others.

- Need help with something in Canvas? You can contact Canvas for support 24/7 via email, phone or chat. To do so, in the Help menu, click "Get Help with Canvas" at the top, then scroll to the bottom of the pop-up window. There you will see the options for direct support. A representative should connect with you within one hour for email tickets and five minutes for phone and chat requests.

Why is Duke switching from Sakai to Canvas?
There are a number of benefits of our move to Canvas:
- Canvas has a formal, centralized support system and an active user community. You will have access to 24/7 Canvas support for any issues and questions you might run into while using Canvas. There is also extensive documentation available to you in the Canvas Student Guide.
- Canvas is a more intuitive, modern, and accessible LMS. Canvas should be an easier site for both you and your instructors to use.
- Canvas has associated mobile apps! You will now be able to easily access your course information, to-do lists, and more from your phone:
When will I use Canvas?
- If you took a course in Summer 2023, you may have seen a Canvas site at Duke for the first time then.
- You will likely encounter at least one course that has moved to Canvas in Fall 2023. Due to our phased transition, this means you will likely have some courses still using Sakai, and some using Canvas. Make sure you are clear on which site you need to use for each of your courses!
- Many additional courses will be transitioned in Spring 2024, but you will likely still have a mix of Sakai and Canvas courses during this semester.
- All courses should be on Canvas in Fall 2024. You will still have read-only access to your Sakai courses at this time, and will retain read-only access through at least July 2025.

Where can I find Sakai resources?
If you are new to Duke and using Sakai for the first time, or need a refresher on how to use Sakai, please refer to these guides and documentation as a starting point.
Is there a way to download my materials out of Sakai?
You will have access to Sakai until at least July 2025, although the system will be view-only after July 2024.
If you wish to download and keep course materials provided by your instructor in a Sakai site, and that Sakai site is no longer available because your instructor has chosen to unpublish it (e.g. hidden it from student view), you will need to reach out to your instructor to see whether they are willing to publish the site again.
If you wish to download course materials authored by your instructor and posted in an available Sakai site, you should verify with your instructor that they are willing for you to retain copies of their intellectual property. For posted course materials not authored by your instructor, be aware of whether copyright laws allow you to keep copies outside of the course end date. In either case you will need to download these individually; there are no bulk download options available.
If you wish to keep copies of your own materials, such as uploaded papers or projects in cases where you have lost or unable to locate the personal copies you retained at the time, you will need to go to each assignment individually in the respective course site and download a copy of your submission. There is no bulk download option available.
What if I am a student at the Medical School or Fuqua?
Before Duke University adopted Canvas, the Medical School and Fuqua each had their own instance of Canvas that they will continue to use at this time. For courses taught at these schools, students should log into the appropriate instance of Canvas:
